WOOD IN THY EYE

Some of you may remember my dear friend, Ms. L, from previous posts.  Last year, she was a student teacher.  THIS year, she has joined the ranks of substitutes.

Picture it…

It’s her first day of subbing.

She was teaching a wood shop class.

She was helping a student cut a piece of plywood.

The student released the plywood….and….BAM it hits her in the eye.

Welcome to the world  of substituting.  Ain’t it grand?

The Tale of the Sub Who Was Locked Out of the Classroom

I was recently out to dinner with some friends, talking shop.  (Speaking about schools and what we do). One friend reminded me how they too tortured substitutes when they were in high school, (if they decided not to like the sub).  She was reminded of Mrs. Tuck.  They locked Mrs. Tuck out of the classroom once, and she, a substitute, the lowest person on the education totem pole, had to go ask the security guards to let her back in the classroom.

Then they did it again.

And, Mrs. Tuck, for fear of termination and eternal embarrassment by her colleagues, climbed back into the room, via the window.

Oh teenagers and the ways they torture us!

Ladies and Gentleman, I have found my new best friend….

Oh my goodness! I am not alone. Please refer to Ms. Mimi’s site, It’s Not All Flowers and Sausages.

We vent.
We write.
We laugh.
We teach…and we’re good at it.

Simple Math.

In some districts, far, far, far, far, far, FAR, away….substitute teachers are not treated like they are the grime that feeds off of the scum that has found itself on the bottom of your shoe.  In FACT, they are given RESPECT. They’re APPRECIATED.

THEY’RE ALLOWED TO WRITE PASSES TO STUDENTS. (Go figure).

And, in these districts, they GET PAID FOR COVERING MORE THAN A FULL DAY OF CLASSES.

A full day of classes, for those of you that do not know, is:

5 classes

2 preps

1 duty

1 lunch.

5 + 2 + 1 + 1 = 9 period day.

Now, in our lovely little world, we get paid EIGHTY FIVE DOLLARS, but in these wonderful far off district lands, they actually make 150 a day.  Imagine what that would be like? What that would feel like? Whatever would I do with all that CASH. Hey, maybe I could actually afford rent….gas….a new car….

A sub can dream, can’t they?
